OCW: The Punishment

The French have Nutella, but Down Under Vegemite’s the favorite spread. The pictures can speak for themselves….

Donna, two bites was as much punishment as I could handle. My palate ranks the saltiness of Vegemite somewhere up there with beef bouillon cubes soaked in soy sauce.

My hubby noticed the expiration date on the bottom of the container at this time–TWO MONTHS AGO! (Unless Aussies use date of sale instead of expiration. Rel?) However, I’d promised Donna to eat the whole thing, so I called in the stunt double for the Vegemite. Look closely and you will be able to determine what looked just like it but was more enjoyable to eat.

    BWAAHHH-HAAHH-HAAHHH-HAAAHH!!!!

Now that was worth it all. Totally cracking up — but I’m glad you didn’t eat the whole thing. “… beef bouillon cubes soaked in soy sauce.” No kidding. : )

Hey Rel! Do y’all have Hershey’s Syrup Down Unda?

Yuch, I can taste the saltiness now. I hate soy sauce. You’re a brave woman Christina. I’d check the ingredients of the syrup, if any comes your way.

Hehehehehehe!!! You will be pleased to know there is no way vegemite will ever go off – too much salt for that – LOL!!! So it was meant to taste that way. You have to have a good amount of butter (the proper stuff not the manufactured kind and littel dabs of it and eat while the toast is still hot!

Who am I trying to kid, I’m not going to convince you, am i?!?!

No Hershey’s Syrup, Donna I’m afraid. Will you still be my friend if I say I have tried Hershey’s chocolate and it was NOT to my liking at all 🙂

I love your description of Vegemite! That’s something that will never cross my palate.

Rel, I don’t know you, so I can’t speak to the strength of your friendships. But be warned; I disowned my niece for a similar statement. She doesn’t like chocolate at all, though, so I’m convinced an alien dropped her on my sister’s doorstep anyway.

Rel … I’m speechless!! I once knew a friend who didn’t like chocolate ice cream, only to find out later it was cuz of her sensitive teeth — she didn’t like any ice cream! (Which is understandable, yet still very very sad.) But for you to not like Hershey’s syrup? Not even stirred into ice cold milk? Not even swirled onto the top of a huge bowl of vanilla ice cream? Not even … well, unlike Christina, I wouldn’t suggest eating it on bread …… ; )

Wowsers. You Aussies are just plain weird. But yeah, ya gotta know … I still love ya. LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS!!!! I’m pretty quick to forgive others’ shortcomings. Right, Christina?

    Hee-hee-hee-hee …….

Rel, I had no idea it was supposed to be on buttered toast! I think a thick layer of dairy might–MIGHT–mellow the Vegemite enough that I would consider, gulp, trying it again sometime. 😉

Donna – it’s Hersheys chocolate I don’t like – haven’t tried the syrup so I’m open to it – when I visit Oregon, I’ll try some how is that! Australian Cadbury chocolate is the way to go or the very best Lindor Lindt balls – yummy!

Christina – yay!!!!! BTW was that Nutella on your bread? And for the record most Aussie kids would have vegemite sandwiches on a regular basis – it really is a staple here – LOL!!!

I’ll stick my neck out even further – Oreo cookies have made it to Australia but can’t say they have taken off – they taste a bit burnt to us – hehehehe!!!!

Maybe I need to send you some Violet Crumble – chocolate coated honeycomb (the crispy kind – extra good!

Nothing better than talking about food. Rel, try an Oreo this way. Submerge it into a glass of milk until you feel the cookie begin to weaken, then pop the whole thing in your mouth.

The bad thing is that you don’t have to chew, which makes me want to eat MANY of them to get the satisfaction.

Oh, I’ve heard about that Vegemite stuff. Nasty. “Eeewww,” would be my personal opinion. But, I homeschool, and at a support group meeting last month, someone equated the idea that if you are raised with something (as in daily Bible reading), you are fine with it. They brought up how kids in Australia actually enjoy that Vegemite. Then the speaker made a face.
Hope this makes sense. My brain is a little tired … long day at work today. My seven year old wanted to come along, and even he is tired out now. He’s busy wearing a pair of pajama pants on his head.
BTW, I noted one of your all time favorite reads is a series that we will be using as part of a curriculum in a couple of years (the Mark of the Lion books). I’ve already bought the first title … looks good!

I’m from down under myself, but I can’t stand the stuff. My cat likes it, but I suspect that’s because of the butter!
